Common misconception of Graphene (Chapter II)

12/24/2024

In the last article, we introduced the two major misconceptions about the price and appearance of graphene; here, we would like to continue to introduce the misconception about the application of graphene.

Misconception 3: It's a graphene product If some graphene in this product

Graphene gradually flew into homes; even cups, stockings, underwear, etc., began to rub the graphene's heat. Graphene batteries and graphene heaters are endless. A wide range of products causes consumers to have a lot of doubts and misunderstandings, and even many businesses feel that a little graphene in the product can be sold at a high price.
We highly believe that only graphene in a product that plays a core function and brings obvious effects can be called a graphene product. For example, we use graphene film to make heat dissipation film instead of polyimide film to achieve better heat dissipation performance.

If the function of graphene is very little in a product, graphene does not play the characteristics it should; the use of graphene in such products is meaningless, like more of a commercial gimmick. Some graphene batteries have been criticized because graphene is only used as an additive item, and the actual product is still a lithium battery.

Misconception 4: Graphene is everything

In the past few decades, there have been tens of thousands of academic articles and patents on graphene. The total number of domestic graphene patent applications has reached 69,000, covering almost all imaginable fields, such as Graphene chips, graphene masks, graphene cables, graphene lubricants, graphene fungicides, graphene batteries, graphene clothing, and other types of products, giving people the feeling that graphene can be applied in any field, like all-purpose oil. It has the magic of turning stone into gold.

Graphene's large-scale application has not yet been opened up, and its application in many fields is still struggling. The general situation is that the price is too high, the substitutability is too strong, and no "killer" applications exist. Although graphene, the king of new materials, carries many beautiful expectations, further exploration is needed.

We believe that the application of graphene needs to be more focused on its intrinsic properties, such as conductivity and thermal conductivity. Maximize the functionality of graphene in these application scenarios, rather than being some dispensable 'panacea' applications.

Conclusion:

Nobel Prize winner Geim said: "Generally speaking, it takes about 40 years for a new material to go from the laboratory to industrialization, but graphene has only taken less than 10 years." This is because graphene has many excellent properties, like hardness, electrical and thermal conductivity, etc., which makes graphene the fastest material to transfer from academic research to practical applications." "But graphene products will not appear overnight 'killer' products; there is a long way to go."

The graphene industry is still very young and needs a gradual process to mature. Constant efforts in multiple fields of application, such as graphene standards, graphene preparation, and so on, are essential.
